On one hand, the virtual enterprise is often considered as a type of co-operation which enables small and medium-size logistics companies to generate competitive advantages over large competitors. On the other hand, in order to participate in a virtual enterprise, the small and medium-size logistics companies have to satisfy certain conditions regarding their ability and willingness to co-operate. By means of an empirical investigation, in which the logistics companies of the state of Saxony-Anhalt were addressed, the author tried to determine to which extent these condition are satisfied and what deficits exist. The findings were that - despite the fact that a surprisingly large number of companies are willing to participate in such a co-operation - only very few satisfy the compulsory conditions.
